I spent the summer after my freshman year of college in Thailand working at an animal rescue center where they rehabilitated monkeys that had been exploited for animal tourism. During the month-long trip, I spent a day at the elephant nature park, which rescues elephants that have been taken captive for tourism purposes. Spending the day petting, playing with and feeding such gentle, intelligent and emotional animals was life changing.
